What Is Sublimation Printing?
Sublimation involves the printing of images and/or
text onto sublimation paper, using Dye-Sublimation inks. Any printer
can usually be used, however this may be restricted by available
sublimation cartridges or bulk ink delivery systems (see Inks &
Paper link to the left), that's why we stick to Epson printers as
they are the most popular and cost effective on the market. The
print is sometimes produced in a mirrored format as high temperatures
and low to high pressure needs to be applied to the printed image
to transfer it onto a prepared sublimation item. This process will
change the ink from a solid state to a gaseous form, allowing the
penetration of the sublimation item with the gas, which then creates
a solid, colourful and long lasting image. The sublimated item is
then hard wearing, and tougher than most other personalised printed
items, that generally print onto the surface of an item, rather
than penetrate it.
Polyester and polymer coated products create a sublimation
items, that then enables the sublimation process above to take place.
Any business or person claiming they can sublimate or penetrate
an item with dye/ink, without this special coating, are inaccurate.
Therefore, natural items like wood and cotton, can not be sublimated.
